Into Magic

Through the Second Life platform, I’ve met dozens of wonderful musicians from around the US and the world. Experienced and aspiring musicians make up a important part of the Second Life audience for any performer and it’s exciting and gratifying and sometimes a little rattling to see them in the the audience and read their comments.RSR_Soar

Meet SOAR (aka “Somerset, Oh & Rhode”). Australian singer-songwriters Charles Somerset, Bright Oh and Experiment Rhode – three real life friends and long time musicians and users of the Second Life platform. SOAR moved their songwriting and performing into SL in early 2009. They are established, well regarded, loved and professional. Join their  with an active and loyal following through their SL group – The SOAR Pandemonium – and an extensive website, blog and online song streaming to further engage with their fans. Facebook and Youtube, of course. Click on the image to start.

Their style falls somewhere between ballads and soft rock though occasionally they toughen up the softness when the mood is right. Bright and Charles share lead vocals, with their original acoustic music often enhanced by multi-layered tracks recorded, arranged and produced entirely by SOAR. I’m a BIG fan.

Experiment Rhode has been coming regularly and suggested a number of songs I’ve since learned well enough to include when I perform. One night – well, night in Portland and 16hrs later in Australia – he approached me with an idea.

As a gift to his fellow bandmates Bright & Charles, to celebrate their 4th SL anniversary, he approached me about recording one of their song: Bright Oh’s “Into Magic.” I was beyond honored. And then he followed up with a similar request of some of the finest musicians in SL. Experiment took the raw files and turned them into a truly beautiful tribute to his friends and their music.

I’ll soon be singing “Into Magic” live in Second Life. But you can listen to all of us… NOW.

Soothing the Savage Beast

Had to share this; made me smile. Thank you, Livingston!

Reggie,

Here is an unusual compliment for you. One of my cats spends most of her life in her own little private spot and rarely comes out to socialize. If I bring her out she’ll sit in my lap for 5 minutes and then is gone again back to her spot.

I brought her out tonight at the beginning of your Portland show. She stayed in my lap for the entire show, purring and even kneading. About 5 min after the show ended she was up and gone again.

You can add “soothes the savage beast” to your resume :)

Appreciation

One of the joys of performing via the  Second Life platform is chatting (texting) afterwards with fans – and fellow musicians – from all over the globe. Some say some wonderfully encouraging things to me. Whiteprincess’ (a nom de Second Life) words capture everything I hope is happening for people while they are listening. For which I thank her. She wrote:

What has been up…

I’ve been slacking on my posts as of late.  Lightening my performance schedule enabled me to produce 2 new songs in the last week.  This has been exciting for me.

Creature of Habit“  is a song I started when I was in college.  I had the topic and the chorus.  I thought I had notes on the words in my ‘book of words’ that I was collecting way back when but, it wasn’t there.  So I started with the theme and the feeling and whittled it into life.

Like a Falling Star” is for my wife.  I wanted simple in words and the feeling I had inside me when I was writing it. I think it works

On my iphone, I keep little snippets of recordings, chord progressions or pickings or licks that come to me while playing my guitar.  ”Falling Star” grew from one of those snippets   By the way check out my new hairdo below :)

InWorldz!

SunsetBeachClubOpeningInviteIW‘Beam me up, Scottie!” Second Life is, among other things, a multi-media platform, laid out and sometimes referred to, as a ‘grid.’ There are other platforms and people who know more about this than I do, hop from grid to grid. One of them is Skye Sunset and her partner Willow. (If virtual worlds are new to you, think of these as pen names.)

I’m always looking for ways to reach new audiences. Last week, I accepted an invitation from SkyeSunset to perform at the Sunset Beach Club in ….in …. InWorldz!  Feb 8, 8pm pacific. Fellow gridhoppers may want to set themselves up InWorldz – it’s free – and come along for the ride. Start here.

Saturday Night

Did I say two hours this week? I guess that’s a work week that starts Monday and ends on Friday. Silly me.

This Saturday night, I played two not-so-private parties via the Second Life platform. Wore my tux. Linda Lane hosted for an hour and then 90 min for Nic Kelberry and the lovely Ivy Carbonell, celebrating their love. Boy, am I thirsty!

Welcomed 10 new folks to my group, got some very nice comments from some new fans, plus requests from old friends and an invitation to play Inworldz (another virtual reality grid) in Feb. TheFiddlah shared his link.

Source tomorrow, regular time, regular place.

LindiMoo, Lyndon Heart & Me

Work is bringing me to Seattle for a few days and inspiration struck! Seattle is home to fellow musicians LindiMoo and Lyndon Heart and to my friend and Second Life venue owner Pajoel Bezner. What if ….. we come together, play and stream the whole thing live into Second Life! Could be wonderful. Could be totally silly too.LH·logo

So, here’s the plan: I drive to Seattle. On Tuesday, Jan 15, Lindi, Paj, Lyndon and I meet up at a Jim Mahoneys, a cool open-mic place in Redmond and play together. We’ll see how it goes.

Then on Wednesday, Jan 16, we haul our equipment to Lindi’s LindiMooHeadfriend Randy’s place. At 8p we begin a 2 hr set at Good Vibe Acoustic Lounge in Second Life. It’s more fun with the SL platform …. if you are interested, get a head start and start here. But either way, you can listen in to us. Paste this into your browser: http://69.162.64.66:9680
